The CRP test measures the blood level of a substance. This is known as C-reactive protein (CRP). C-reactive protein is a marker of signs of inflammation in the body. If it is between 30-50 units in the test then it is normal and if its quantity is more than normal then it indicates a problem in the body. The liver makes CRP as a response to inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the body's healing response. When a wound or injury becomes red, or has swelling or pain, it indicates inflammation.

If the level of C-reactive protein increases in individuals affected by SARS-CoV-2 then it is the virus responsible for COVID-19. Severe COVID-19 infection can result in an overproduction of inflammatory cytokines and interleukins. These chemical messengers help the body fight the virus. In addition, they can damage lung tissue when the immune system overreacts. Thus, inflammatory cytokines and tissue damage increase CRP.

Low vitamin D levels can be a possible cause of chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is linked to inflammatory health conditions, including cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Increased inflammatory biomarkers in the blood such as C-reactive protein may be an indicator of chronic inflammation. For people with vitamin D deficiency, improving vitamin D levels can help decrease chronic inflammation. Vitamin D is also called the sunshine vitamin because our body makes it from cholesterol when our skin is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D has recently gained attention for its role in immune health in relation to COVID-19. It is also important for bone health and many important functions throughout our bodies. Most adults should get 1500-2000 International Units of vitamin D daily. While some foods, such as fatty fish and fortified dairy products, also contain this vitamin. It is difficult to get enough of it through diet alone. Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide.

Ways to lower CRP levels

1. The level of C-reactive protein can be reduced by making changes in diet and lifestyle and can also take suggestions from the doctor.

2. Do not delay treating the condition responsible for the inflammation to reduce the level of increased C-reactive protein.

3. By reducing weight we can reduce the level of CRP.

4. Increased CRP due to an inactive lifestyle can be reduced by regular physical activity and increased heart rate.

5. A total energy expenditure of about 1,000 calories per week may help to reduce CRP levels.

6. Mental attitude has an effect on body and C-reactive protein levels. Mindfulness practices, meditation and yoga help in changing the mental attitude of a person.

7. To help reduce CRP levels, we should have a healthy diet. Our diet should be rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables and our diet should include bananas, pears, beans and legumes, apples, whole grains, cruciferous vegetables like Brussels sprouts and broccoli, strawberries etc.

8. Consumption of alcohol, such as a glass of wine, also helps in reducing the level of C-reactive protein but abstinence from alcohol is also essential. It needs to be taken in moderation. CRP can be reduced by consuming green tea and coffee. Compounds present in green tea reduce inflammation caused by increased CRP.
